On-duty (“permanence”) means the rota pharmacy is actually open: on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, and on weekday evenings. On-call (“garde”) covers the rest, mainly at night: the door is closed and you should not simply turn up — 3237 (French-language service) checks who is on call and directs you, sometimes to a pharmacy other than the one shown here. The handover from one pharmacy to the next happens on Friday evening.

Once the on-duty slots are over (usually after 8 pm), the pharmacy is no longer open to the public: call 3237 (€0.35/min, French-language service), the national line that tells you which pharmacy is on call and what to do next. During on-duty slots (Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, weekday evenings) the pharmacy is open and dispenses as usual, with or without a prescription. At night, however, the on-call pharmacist comes out for urgent needs only: call 3237 first, and bring your prescription and your carte Vitale (or insurance details). You may also be asked for photo ID.
